BBC News: Russell Brand tells court allegations had ‘devastating’ impact

Russell Brand arrived at court this morning to give evidence at his own trial, as the defence began to make its case.
The 51-year-old is charged with seven offences. He’s accused of three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault.
When asked by his barrister if he had committed any of those offences, listing each charge individually, he replied, “no”.
He told the court “consent is fundamental, essential, necessary and indeed in many ways more important than sex itself”.
Russell Brand told the jury that the various TV and newspaper investigations into his alleged sexual misconduct had had a “devastating” impact on him.
When asked if he was able to persuade a single person with relevant evidence to come to give evidence on his behalf, he replied, “I have not”.
The barrister said, “would they touch you with a barge pole?”
Brand replied, “no”.
He’s denied all the charges and has pleaded not guilty.
The trial continues.

① be charged with ~

② be accused of -, 「~の容疑をかけられている」「~で告発されている」。
He’s accused of three counts of rape.

③ give evidence

④ plead not guilty

⑥ touch you with a barge pole

Would they touch you with a barge pole?
