How could the Budget impact YOUR bank balance?

Woman:
Hey Anuk, did you hear that minimum wage is going up?
Anuk:
Okay. By how much?
Woman:
Well, if you’re over 21, it’ll be at least £13.21 an hour. If you’re between 18 and 20, it’ll be £11.27. And if you’re 16 or 17, it’ll go up to £8.31.
Anuk:
Right, so why isn’t everyone getting the same?
Woman:
Yeah, the government did promise to eventually make it so that everyone who is an adult was paid the same rate, but this year the gap isn’t really closing.
Anuk:
So when’s today’s change kicking in?
Woman:
Well, people will get the pay rise in April. But it is worth pointing out that the points at which you pay different rates of income tax are still staying frozen. So if your pay goes up, you might find that more of it ends up being taxed.
Anuk:
What else could help my finances?
Woman:
Well, you’ll get £100 off your energy bill if you live in England and your home is in Council Tax band A to D. Governments in the other UK nations will also get the cash, and they’ll decide whether to make those payments, too.
Anuk:
But how will the government pay for that?
Woman:
The plan is, to pay for it, they’re going to charge banks an extra 3% on their profits for the next 15 months.
Anuk:
So what else did they say about energy bills?
Woman:
Well, yeah, the Chancellor said that next year it’ll scrap a daily fixed charge on gas that’s on everyone’s bills. It’s not actually costing the government anything, as we’ll just be paying more for the gas that we do use instead.
Anuk:
Will I save a decent amount from this?
Woman:
Well, it all depends how much gas you use, to be honest. The government thinks that around six in ten households will see an average saving of about £45 a year.
Anuk:
Well, that sounds like my bills are getting cheaper. Are they?
Woman:
Well Anuk, actually no, because in January we’re expecting energy bills to go up again and by a hefty amount. So even if some people are getting some money off, millions of people are still going to be facing higher bills.
