Why have hundreds of ‘cockroach’ protesters been detained in Delhi?
We’ve seen buses full of young protesters being driven away with them slamming the windows, the constant sound on loudspeaker of the warning that there is a ban on gatherings of five people or more. And that video of Abhijit Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, as he’s being detained as he lands in Delhi.
These restrictions are the most far-reaching the capital has seen in recent years, and this latest cause is about the credibility of free and fair elections in the world’s largest democracy.
The controversial revision of the electoral rolls doesn’t impact Gen Z protesters as directly as the exam leaks did, you might remember those mass protests in Delhi, but they’re still risking detention, and they’re demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar.
130 million names have been written off the electoral roll, and the BJP government and the Election Commission insist that’s to remove duplicate and ineligible entries, but that hasn’t stopped people from turning out onto the street.
