Meta has agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle claims from 29 U.S. states that Facebook and Instagram harmed children. The company denies wrongdoing, but the deal follows difficult court evidence about what Meta bosses knew about the harms on their platforms.
Meta has also agreed to major changes with 52 states and territories. Here’s what could change for teens:
A 2-hour daily limit by default, a block between midnight and 6:00 a.m., and feeds that aren’t tailored to them. Meta also says likes and reactions will be hidden by default, while videos would not automatically play. But teens could still turn some of those settings off unless a parent takes control of the account.
And there’s another catch. Meta says 30% of the money depends on Google’s YouTube and TikTok matching those limits and paying the same amount. Meta says that’s about fairness, but it also shows how the company’s social media business and the data and advertising money it brings in still matters. They don’t want to be at a competitive disadvantage.
