2050 ‘weather forecast’ video sounds alarm on worsening global warming
Tuesday, Aug. 4, 16:01
A Japanese organization working on measures against climate change has released a video that features fictional weather forecasts for the year 2050.
The organization created it in cooperation with the United Nations Information Centre, the University of Tokyo, the National Institute for Environmental Studies, and others. The video was shown to the media on Monday.
Based on the latest studies, experts projected what Japan’s weather could be like on August 8, 2050, if the pace of carbon dioxide emissions remains unchanged.
A weather forecaster in the video says temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher have been recorded at 157 locations, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the southwest, and that the high is expected to reach 43 degrees in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture.
The forecaster says people are strongly urged to refrain from going out from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., childcare centers and kindergartens are closed, and outdoor activities and agricultural work on farmland where there is no shade are strictly prohibited.
She warns that an increase in the number of people suffering from heatstroke is overwhelming paramedics. As a result, in Tokyo it may take more than an hour for ambulances to arrive.
The forecaster also says a powerful typhoon with a maximum wind speed of 216 kilometers per hour is approaching the Shikoku region in western Japan. The maximum wind gust speed is expected to reach 360 kilometers per hour, which could knock down steel towers and rip off roofs. A storm surge of more than five meters will be likely in Osaka Bay. The video stresses the need for a mechanism to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming.
The video is an updated version of the “WMO Weather Report 2050” created in 2014 by the United Nations’ climate agency — the World Meteorological Organization — and others.
The original version said temperatures in Tokyo would be 30 degrees or higher for more than 50 consecutive days through the week of the equinox in September, 2050. However, temperatures already exceeded those predictions in 2023.
Professor Emori Seita at the Institute for Future Initiatives of the University of Tokyo supervised the new video.
Emori said that a rise in average global temperatures is expected to lead to not only an increase in heatstroke patients, but also an increase in infectious diseases, stressing that global warming must be stopped.
He said that he hopes the video will create an opportunity to help accelerate the transformation of society into one independent of fossil fuels.
